Special Programs
Kiwanis International is a global organization of members who are dedicated to serving the children of the world. Service projects provide valuable and needed services to our community such as, serving the needs of children, fighting hunger and improving literacy.
Early Literacy Project
Early Literacy Project started in 2018, when a member expressed an interest in supporting early literacy by donating a new book each week to a kindergarten classroom in Monterey. These books were signed by the people who would come and speak to the club each week. By 2020 this service project evolved into giving a new book to every first grader, every month and at every public school in Monterey. We have been providing books to first grade classes ever since and we have donated well over 8,000 books so far. The books are given to the first-grade teachers with only the hope that they will find a way to use the book in their reading instruction.
How can you help?
Until we can return to donate time and talent in the classrooms you can donate funds to be used to support this project:
One book, for one first grader, each month for a school year: $19
One book for twenty first grade students, plus five for the teacher for one month $45
One book for twenty first grade students, plus five for the teacher all for a full year. $450
One full first grade program for one elementary school in Monterey for a school year. $1,800
To provide the full program in all ten first grades in Monterey for one school year. $4,500
